Quick Reference
Seizure first aid, at a glance
Do
- Stay with the person and start timing the seizure
- Ease them to the floor and turn them gently onto one side
- Clear the area of anything hard or sharp
- Put something soft and flat under their head
- Remove eyeglasses and loosen anything around the neck
- Stay calm and speak reassuringly as they come around
Don't
- Do NOT hold the person down or restrict their movements
- Do NOT put anything in their mouth
- Do NOT offer food or water until they are fully alert
Call 911 if…
- The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
- A second seizure follows quickly
- The person is injured, pregnant, or has never had a seizure before
- The person has difficulty breathing or waking afterward
